Assistant Builders (4 Posts)

Road construction and maintenance contract workers. Council is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the following posts. It is imperative that the individuals occupying the posts be persons of integrity, inspired by the desire for efficient and effective service delivery in line with Council and national policies and programmes.

Contract period: 3 (three) months. Reporting to: Roads Foreman.

Overall purpose of the jobs

The jobholders will be responsible for conducting routine upkeep, repair and resurfacing of roadways to ensure safe, efficient roving.

Roles and responsibilities

• Clearing drains, cleaning signs, trenching, sweeping and other duties as directed by the team leader.
• Filling potholes to stop water from destroying the underlying roadbed.
• Drain lining using stone pitching, blocks and concrete.
• Culvert construction.
• Pothole patching.
• Road marking.

Typical working conditions

• Physical stamina: the job requires physical effort, including manual labour, and working under various, sometimes adverse, weather conditions.
• Hours: operators may be required to work long, irregular hours, weekends, or respond to emergencies (e.g. road washouts).

Qualifications, experience, skills and attributes

• At least an O-Level certificate.
• Experience in road maintenance and construction works is an added advantage.
