How to spot and avoid job scams in Zimbabwe
Looking for work should never cost you money. Recruitment263 is free for job seekers, and every listing is reviewed before it goes live — but scammers still target job seekers everywhere, so it pays to know the warning signs. This guide shows you how to tell a genuine vacancy from a scam.
The golden rule: never pay for a job. A legitimate employer will never ask you for money — not for the application, interview, training, uniform, medical, police clearance, "registration" or "processing" fee. If anyone asks you to pay to get or keep a job, it is a scam. Walk away.
Red flags — be very careful if…
- You're asked to pay any fee, deposit or "refundable" amount before starting.
- The salary sounds far too high for the work, or you're "hired" with no real interview.
- You're asked for your bank PIN, EcoCash PIN, a one-time password, or money to "process" your salary.
- The employer only uses a free email or a personal WhatsApp and won't share a real company name or address.
- You're pressured to decide or pay "right now" before the offer "expires".
- An "agent" promises to guarantee you a job for a fee. No one can guarantee a job.
How to check a job is genuine
- Read the full advert and apply using the exact email or link given — directly to the employer.
- Look up the company independently — a real address, phone number and website are good signs.
- Be cautious sharing personal documents until you've confirmed the employer and the role are real.
- Trust your instincts — if something feels off, ask questions or step away. A real employer won't mind.
