Chief Technician — Faculty of Engineering (1)

About the Role

The Chief Technician oversees the operation, maintenance and development of laboratories, workshops and other technical facilities within the faculty, providing expert technical support to academic staff, researchers and students, supervising technical personnel, managing equipment and resources, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies and health and safety regulations.

Duties:
- Manage all laboratories and workshops in the faculty to ensure effective delivery of teaching, research, innovation, industrialisation and community engagement.
- Actively participate in income-generating activities of the faculty.
- Ensure safety of machinery, equipment, tools, staff and students in the laboratories.
- Ensure Standard Operating Procedures are followed and oversee procurement of laboratory equipment, machinery and tools.
- Ensure adequate stock of training consumables and timely servicing and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintain inventory records; supervise and performance-assess Technicians; participate in Quality Assurance processes.

Requirements

- A relevant Honours Bachelor's Degree in one of the disciplines offered in the faculty and at least 5 years relevant post-qualification experience.
- Class 1 Journeyman Card in the related field, ND/HND in the related discipline (Mining Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering).

Skills: Extensive experience in technical operations and equipment maintenance; strong leadership and supervisory skills; excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities; good communication; knowledge of occupational health and safety standards; proficiency in technical documentation; computer literacy.
