About the Role
The Department of Biological Sciences invites applications from highly motivated undergraduate students undertaking industrial attachment/internship as part of their degree programme. Successful candidates will join a research and product development team working on the development and value addition of food products derived from indigenous fruits.
The attachment provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in food science, biotechnology, microbiology, product development, laboratory techniques, quality assurance and applied research.
Duties:
- Assist with the collection, handling, processing and preservation of indigenous fruit samples.
- Participate in the formulation and development of novel food products from indigenous fruits.
- Conduct laboratory analyses (physicochemical, microbiological and sensory) under supervision.
- Prepare laboratory reagents, operate equipment and maintain cleanliness and safety standards.
- Accurately record experimental observations and research data; assist with data entry, analysis and technical reports.
- Support quality control and quality assurance during product development.
- Assist with pilot-scale production, product optimisation, packaging and shelf-life studies.

Requirements
- Studying towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Biological Sciences/Biotechnology or a closely related field.
- Must have completed Level 2.2 of the degree programme by 1 August 2026.
- Registered undergraduate student entering Level 3 (Third Year) and eligible for industrial attachment.
- Send a CV accompanied by Level 1 and Level 2 results and an industrial attachment letter from the university.
Skills: Basic understanding of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, food science or biotechnology; familiarity with good laboratory practices (GLP); basic laboratory skills; computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; attention to detail; teamwork and time management.
